Let’s be clear here. Linux is the most used OS on the planet and has been for a long time. This is just about desktops
Right but if we're being honest, desktop OS are really the only one that matters. Most non tech people don't care or know that they own 12 different stripped down Linux boxes because those boxes are tvs or roombas or whatever.
Maybe not, but surely the clouds' infrastructure, the webservers, and the mobile phones matter to people...
Moreover even if the 10% is inflated, Windows falling to 57 is crazy
Oh for sure the 10% and 57% are insane.
But not really no. Most non tech people barely realize the cloud is someone else's computer, nevermind thinking about what software that computer runs. Same thing with webservers. Phones are further obscured cause it's not expressed as Linux.
People don't know, but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter
Do things you have no concept of matter to you typically? How can something matter to you if you have never spared a single thought for it before?
I feel like this is the wrong approach. I don't care about specific strength of steel or building codes. But I’d care if a building fell upon me. I don't care about the effluent pump station down the road, but I’d probably care if shit started flowing out onto the street .
You can not care about upstream events or technologies. Mostly because you’re happy with the outcome, you never have to care or spare a thought. Most of life is like that.
I think we agree on this, but maybe I'm saying it in a way that seems counter to what I'm thinking. My point is Linux adoption only matters in terms of desktop because it's the only time that the OS is actually important. 99% of people don't care what kind of motor or brushes their Roomba has. They care it cleans the floor good. They don't care it runs Linux. They care it's smart enough not to crash into walls 24/7. But people do care what OS they directly interact with because it is the thing they're directly interfacing with.
