Driving between them takes 5 minutes in a straight line. Safely walking between them, however, is a six-hour diversion through four unrelated towns, as opposed to the 30 or so minutes it would take in a straight line. Thanks to hostile architecture, I guess.
Strange. I looked up the area on street view and there are sidewalks and a few cross walks on the road. It might not be pleasant, but certainly seems doable. Certainly better that a 6hr detour.
What is the straight short line between the two places like, then? I presume there's a terrible lack of pavement?
Yeah I mean just take a walk in pretty much any town or city in the US* and you will quickly see how everything was designed only with cars in mind and just the smallest nod to pedestrians. Like for anything more than crossing the street it is abysmal.
The real issue is that you're using Google Maps and Google Maps is notoriously bad when creating pedestrian or bike routes. For those cases you should use a router that's based on OpenStreetMap since OSM's database it's way better when dealing with foot and bike infrastructure. The same route using an OSM based router gives a perfectly fine walkable route.
Have you considered digging a tunnel under the freeway?
See, there were smart people at work here. By forcing people into cars, no one will accidentally draw the sigil of Nyarlathotep on the ground. Nyarlathotep is called The Crawling Chaos for a reason.
This is a problem I have with Google Maps, who insists that some roads cannot be bicycled upon. Maybe because they're designated as freeways? Dunno!
But yes, sometimes Google doesn't have enough information about the pathways that are for other than cars.
