They have 0% chance in this case. If you watch the jerryrig video the evidence is pretty damning.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

They even copied the easter eggs from debrand as well

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Nevermind the Easter eggs, they copied a Dbrand Logo!

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone 😤

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

in this case

Pun intended?

Do they even have a chance at winning considering casetify is from China and they do not care about copyright infringement?

Headquartered in Hong Kong, where a separate intellectual property regime that closely follows the English model is in place, different from mainland China.

Hong Kong law means nothing anymore. The judges have all already been carefully picked and those they don’t like have been kicked out a long time ago. There is no rule of law in HK, the CCP will decide the outcome.

Gosh there it is again, the inevitable comment every time Hong Kong is mentioned on Reddit. I know the city I’m born and living in well enough to tell others about how it is. And before you ask, i was there on June 12th and 16th, 2019.

Casetify has a US presence and sells in the US via retailers and everything. It’s not exactly easy or possible for them to avoid the US potentially ordering they halt sales and production of the items that infringe DBrand’s rights.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

It appears they are suing the US entity. They do not say if they commenced actions overseas. If they only use the US entity then only that one will be affected.

They are HQ in Hong Kong and fortunately, still do have robust enforcement of copyright laws. You can enforce foreign judgments, particularly American ones through reciprocal enforcement arrangements. This is complicated and depends on which entities they sue.

Presumably their lawyers would have advised them on this properly and know the situation better than we do.

Casetify cases are so overpriced that I was surprised to hear that they steal artwork.

But at least they put in some effort into their designs

Designing stuff can be pretty expensive

Every single time you or anyone comments “cope”, it just screams “I have no actual response and I’m too dumb to have any back and forth with someone”. No one thinks it’s clever or witty.

Cry more. Wahhh

For dBrand you basically pay for their aftersales/customer services. Bought skins from them in the past, installed it by following the instructions (with hair dryer) and one the skins was loose in the corners, mailed them with images and they sent a free one all the way form Canada to the Netherlands.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Not really. I find their designs and quality to be worth it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago
[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

meanwhile they're using apple logos, regulatory marks etc on their own designs...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Dbrand is fine to leverage other companies brands, in fact, they make it their entire identity. I understand there’s a difference between what they do vs this blatant rip off. But as someone who dislikes everything about Dbrand, I do enjoy the little irony.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

And dbrand ripped off someone else’s. Why is this news.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Wacth the video first. Dbrand isnt suing because Casetify ripped off the idea. They are suing because casetify has the exact same image from dbrand cases.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

And dbrand just copies another companies design. It’s like a dvd pirates complaining someone pirated their copy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Who's design? Watch the video Jerry Rigs everything takes the scans and edits them to look "cooler". Then easter eggs get added.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Good for them, hope casetify gets wrecked.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Always thought Casetify was a sh.. company

Dbrand isn’t great either but I hate Casetify more

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Am I missing something here? A teardown skin will obviously be identical because it’s based on the internals and the internals of a device are the same regardless of which company opens it….

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

DBrand/Jerryrig added eastereggs to the teardown skins. Casetify copied those on their prints too. Besides that, DBrand also change some of the internal designs to make it look better (removing a heatsink to make more of the internals visible, removing internal logos from apple/samsung, etc.). Jerry shows in his video what they do when making these skins (seems like a lot of work too).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

The issue is Casetify copied the little details (easter eggs) Debrand added to the skins. You can see the Twitter thread for more details.

Good luck to Zack who has had his designs directly stolen. Absolutely unsurprising, scummy company with no morals beyond get rich at any cost. So many reviews of people with a month old $85 phone case that's peeling. Rip off merchants, who on earth is stupid enough to pay 80-100 dollars for a phone case?

Defo on my boycott list.
