I want to get my brother an iPhone X refurbished for Christmas but I don’t want to get him a phone that won’t be supported by apps etc within a year or 2

It’s already not supported. The real question is how long will iOS 16 be supported for, and I wager not much longer.

    Get an iPhone 11 or 12 at least. XR and XS support will like cease after iOS 17 and the 11 should at least get iOS 12
