Hey - We are going to take the plunge and get my daughter an iphone for xmas. I don't want to buy her a brand new one in fear she will lose it since it is her first one. I was thinking a refurbished one off Amazon. I've never bought a "used" phone before, and my understanding is I can buy any phone I want and then take it to any carrier I want and have them set it up with a sim card and a cell plan.

Is this correct? I know this is a dumb question.. but I've turned into a total luddite with technology...

Any advice on buying a used iphone would be welcomed. Thanks in advance!

You can also buy with a credit card that offers lost/damaged phone protection. I think the Venture X by Capital One does that.

I bought a 13 refurbished from Amazon. It’s in excellent shape and 89%battery health. I have no complaints.

Don’t buy Amazon Refurbished, as per the posts/comments on this very sub, they use sub par batteries that don’t last even a year. Best to go with Apple Refurbished, they use genuine parts and you’ll have Apple’s warranty so even if it’s a little expensive it’ll probably be worth it in the long run.

thanks, I wasn't aware of this. Apple refurbs on their website are pricey. I don't want to drop $500 on a phone and have her lose it, but.. perhaps the risk is worth the trade off?
