What’s that in °Civilized?

-23 fucking brass monkeys mate

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 42 points 3 months ago

It's really an impressive strike.

[-] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 36 points 3 months ago

Google says it's -23C. WTF are they rooting at the north pole or something

I was at a protest last winter in Chicago. I believe it was 16 degrees. It was insane. My buddy and I bundled up. Layers. He brought heat packs. We prepared.

It was still brutal. We found walking helped but damn. I think we only lasted just shy of 2 hours. We tried but even my thick thighs (covered by my thick fur lined parka coat) were starting to feel pain from the cold within the first hour.

I say this because that's still 25 degrees warmer than it was for these people

Damn that's some hardcore protesting in Minnesota.

There were loads of people giving hand warmer out for free. And saw one guy had a big cooler jug like at football games full of hot cider he was passing out

Who knew tailgating would turn out to be praxis?

[-] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago

Community building is a huge part of praxis

Thereabouts. Chicago is always windy though. It's absolutely no joke being outside like that.

[-] daannii@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Yeah I mean. I think that sounds right. I do remember the news saying something like 16F but feels like -10F. Or something. The wind chill factor

Its legit ice wind up there in the winter. And this was downtown, right off the lake.

I do think it's easier to stay warm if you are moving though but this time they just had like speeches and people standing and I couldn't handle how cold my legs got.

I guess that's a tip for cold protesting organizers.
Keep the people moving. They need it for warmth.

I mean it's cold weather but I assumed it would've been more if it was described as brutal and whatnot

[-] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 7 points 3 months ago

They're remembering their experience in - 10 C, which was already brutal to them, and imagining how terrible it must have been for the folks in Minneapolis in - 23C.

[-] daannii@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Yeah. I'm like. Wow. Those people are some bad ass MFers.

I'm the kind of person who thinks lake michigan water in the early summer is the perfect temperature (60F/17C) for swimming when all my friends are blue lipped and shivering.

I honestly always say Im more tolerant of the cold than most.

But apparently I ain't got nothing on Minnesota peps.

[-] axx@slrpnk.net 21 points 3 months ago

That is a sight to behold.

[-] grapefruittrouble@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 months ago

must be pretty warm in the crowd with those good souls

[-] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Where was ICE during all this? Obviously not near a crowd large enough they couldn't intimidate.

[-] medgremlin@midwest.social 5 points 3 months ago

They were brutalizing the protesters at the Whipple federal building and the airport where they arrested 100 clergy that were blocking the entrance and singing hymns.

[-] BanMe@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago

They just murdered another ICE watcher, I am seeing videos of it happen out of Minnesota friends who are watchers, but it's not on the news yet or even here.

[-] austin@piefed.social 9 points 3 months ago

wasn't sure whether to believe you (your name is banme) but I think I just got an article about it(?)

[-] AlexLost@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Yes it is. I've heard about it from Canada through socials

[-] AlexLost@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago

People who live in cold places are used to going out in the cold. Like, the city doesn't shut down or anything. Yeah it's cold, but they have this thing called a jacket, and if you live in winterland, you probably own at least one decent one. And add layers, Jerry. Layers!

[-] Lifter@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 3 months ago

Yeah but we aren't used to be out all day. Most people just commute to work and back.
