TLDR: New CEO wants Top Gun 3, and there are two Star Trek films in development. A fourth Chris Pine lead film and a prequel set decades beforehand with the creation of Starfleet and their first alien encounter.

Yes, TOS era and prequels is what Star Trek needs, definitely, with loads and loads of fanservice and hilarious in-jokes about future events. New stories are stupid, where's the fun in having stakes and not knowing what's going to happen anyway? Franchises should never ever move on from anything ever.
