General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both [email protected] and [email protected] .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

[email protected] appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

Yikes ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I think her plan is to put everyone in the country off voting for the Conservatives. What a stupid route to take for the shambles that is the Home Secretary.

I don't know how easy it is to abuse a system whereby if you want to claim asylum you need to prove you are gay in an interview... It was only as recently as 10 years ago where applicants were literally submitting their own photos and videos to try to prove their sexuality. While this has since been stopped (by Theresa May of all people), I can't imagine that such a interview process is much less difficult to manipulate or harrowing for an an asylum seeker.

Also the statement that "The UK cannot be the refugee camp for the entire world" is so bafflingly ignorant and flippant that I can barely believe it. Deciding to focus on some of the most marginalized and vulnerable people is revolting.

shes basically unemployable after the next General Election. So what is the point of this speech to a right wing think tank? 1) hat in the ring for leader of the opposition or 2) lucrative book tour/right wing think tank job. This is exactly what Truss and Bojo are doing now they have abandoned the country. They cant all fuck off soon enough and we should have a snap election asap.

I think it's about using the platform she currently has to poison the waters, and shift the Overton window as far as possible in favour of the far-right, in the short time still available to her. Lucrative book deals etc. are just icing on the cake.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The home secretary told an audience at the right-wing American Enterprise Institute (AEI) in Washington DC that "we now live in a completely different time" from when the convention was signed.

On Tuesday morning, Police Minister Chris Philp told the BBC the convention was being exploited by "economic migrants to try and claim asylum to move between countries".

"But we will not be able to sustain an asylum system if in effect, simply being gay, or a woman, and fearful of discrimination in your country of origin is sufficient to qualify for protection.

"I have confidence that her dog whistles won't be heard internationally so she should spend her time on sorting out the appalling backlog of asylum claims rather than distracting us by victim blaming," Mr Boff said.

The home secretary's speech comes as the government prepares for a Supreme Court hearing on whether its plan for tackling small boat crossings is legal.

They are punishable by life imprisonment and, in some parts of northern Nigeria, by death (according to The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association)
