"The commies don't want you to even own your own toothbrush!"

Well well well, how the turntables.

[-] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago

I just can't wait to continue my Oral-B brushing experience.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

I don't want an 'experience' I just want my teeth to not rot away 😭

[-] [email protected] 133 points 2 days ago

THIS is why the Internet of Things is a bad idea. They will make you pay a monthly fee to make the toothbrush work.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 17 hours ago

Am I going to have to buy a lifetime supply of brushes now before they enshitify...

[-] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

And your toothbrush will be part of a bot network. Yay!

[-] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Also that one case where a casino was hacked though a fish tank thermometer. Save for phones and computers, any other 'smart' devices can burn in hell. I'm not paying a fucking subscription to use my freezer, I'll rather just live like a medieval peasant.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 18 hours ago

the phones should be "dumb" too. smartphones were an egregious mistake.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

Well, at least we get unlockable bootloaders (for now).

[-] [email protected] 3 points 17 hours ago

Meh, I like having internet on my phone.

[-] [email protected] 78 points 2 days ago

Worse. They will track my shamefully lax dental hygiene habits.

[-] [email protected] 65 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Hey, guess why your dental insurance just went up!

(unless you're blessed to live in a country with socialized healthcare)

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

unfortunately i don't know any country that considers teeth and eyes to be part of the body, everyone considers them an optional luxury you have to pay for.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 48 minutes ago

Try places in mainland Europe. I've had three of my teeth fixed for free (paid through taxes) by an extremely skilled dentist.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

At least like many IOT devices it does not have an update, imagine oh nyo I can't brugh my teeth now, it's updating the firmware

[-] [email protected] 42 points 2 days ago

“It looks like you’re not using an authorized Oral-B toothbrush head, for your safety your toothbrush has self destructed.”

[-] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

You have until one week later to pay damages to Oral-B for their tooth brush as well as the reputational damage that comes from a big name brand having to associate with chinese-owned products. The invoice also includes one Spy Device Pro Plus, to monitor you for any further reckless behavior, as was agreed when you signed our license agreement fifteen years ago when you were gifted a trial tube of toothpaste at your local supermarket. We wish you a nice day and a happy Oral-B Toothbrushing Experience.

[-] [email protected] 37 points 2 days ago

You have to be a special kind of stupid to buy an internet connected toothbrush.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

Oh my god, my mom's shitty hp printer never works with my cups install. IT BREAKS EVERY UPDATE AND SHE'S STILL A HP FAN NO MATTER THE PRICE OF INK (the original, because nothing else works).

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

At least it makes some sense for the printer to connect you a network. The toothbrush could easily sync using BLE since the user will always be close to the toothbrush while in use.

[-] [email protected] 40 points 2 days ago

Man it's not like I want to, but there's a non zero chance that I'll turn into a (more intersectional) ted kacynsky in the futuse

[-] [email protected] 48 points 2 days ago

We had to read the unibomber manifesto in college, in a class on terrorism and extremism. NGL, I feel uncomfortable knowing that he's being proven right an awful lot 😞

[-] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

It doesn't take a genius to know how fucked and hopeless the outlook is, only someone willing to look beyond a just world bias. If anything, believing things aren't irrevocably fucked is burying your head in the sand.

Where the Unabomber is an awful person is what he thinks we should do. He thinks we shouldn't try to live the best lives we can. He thinks cruelty is somehow justified, when all that's really justified is doing what you must to survive. All the people who recognize the truth and didn't decide to kill people will never be remembered like that prick. Like most mass killers, he just wanted to be remembered.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

In his defense he did get MK-Ultrad.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

You can't eat your cake and have it too

[-] [email protected] 25 points 2 days ago

This post is extremely misleading. The app isn't required to use the toothbrush, the app is just for coaching your brushing, and it's advertised as such. You do not need to use the app if you don't want to.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

"Coaching your brushing"

I wish I was dead so I could spin in my grave right now, isn’t that something people learn when they’re 5? What do adult humans who pay 400€ for a toothbrush need a coaching for?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

having your toothbrush coach you is absurd, but we really don't teach people how to properly brush.
I looked it up a year ago and it turns out you just fuckin hold the head against the front, top, and back of each tooth, and raise it off the tooth before moving it to the next spot. Really we should just stop calling it "brushing" and instead say "polishing" because that's what you're doing.

If you brush it back and forth you'll be fucking up your gums

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

Well, I'm 18 and am still terribly shitty at it. To be fair, I'm lazy and always half-ass it.

[-] [email protected] 37 points 2 days ago

And why does it need an online account for that?

[-] [email protected] 47 points 2 days ago

(I know you’re asking rhetorically, I just like the aesthetics of responding like that)

[-] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago

Does the toothbrush stop working if I log out of the OralB account?

[-] [email protected] 25 points 2 days ago

My book ran out of batteries.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

“Stupid future”

[-] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago

Does this mean... it's a multi-user toothbrush? And if so, exactly how many accounts does a single toothbrush support?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 17 hours ago

That's normal for electric brushes, just change the head

[-] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago

I can't escape this hell
So many times I've tried
But I'm still caged inside
Somebody, get me through this nightmare

spoilerYes, yes I am.

Statements concocted by the utterly deranged

But unironically

[-] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

So, I just got an idea, if we keep slowly going, would people be outraged enough by artificial heart subscription (or similar)?

You know, if we just keep moving the bar bit by bit. Artificial bionic eye subscription, nothing life treating at first. Just a bit of outrage pushed down with "But those poor people couldn't afford it otherwise. We actually gave them a chance they couldn't otherwise get.", splitting the crowd into 2 opposing forces until it dies down when something else pops up, and in the meantime, when all the focus will be on elections or whatever, we start introducing pacemaker subscriptions.

Or you know what, no. Prohibitively expensive purchase price and subscription option with the illusion of choice. Outrage? It was their choice.

This is the plot of Repo!: The Genetic Opera

[-] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

Does it have terms of services and a license to use a tooth brush?

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
