Or what I did the other day, put in a dd command with bs=1 where I meant to type bs=1M. Why is this taking so long? Is my drive broken? Is it even doing anything? Took me a while to notice my mistake

I like how you assume double-checking would save my dumb ass. Hell, maybe it does. I'll run fdisk or lsblk, stare at each character, and run it again just to be safe

My SD card reader doesn't even have a light.
