i am interested in changing my username, i was originally going to create a new one and delete the one im posting this from. but registrations on lemmy.ml are closed. how do i change my username??

I think no such feature exists.

    You can’t. Just register on another instance, if Lemmy.ml is closed for new registrations.

    You could just change your Display Name in the settings.
