MODERATORS

Hey comrades,

Recently I saw a wave of news articles that described the recent developments in Mexico regarding the reform of the elections - with special attention to the National Electoral Institute (INE) -.

At the moment I’m only able to find western/neo-liberal news sources about this subject. I was wondering how you are seeing/analyzing these event - especially if you’re from Mexico – and if you have some non-western/neo-liberal sources.

Here's what AMLO has to say about it 1

Spanish“marcha por la democracia”, que se realizó ayer, “ahora se disfrazan de demócratas, cuando ellos eran los más tenaces violadores de los derechos del pueblo”, aseveró el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The organizers of the so-called “march for democracy,” which took place yesterday, “now disguise themselves as democrats, when they were the most tenacious violators of the people's rights,” said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The fight is about whether INE is an autonomous institution that protects democracy, or if it's a captured institution that is heavily biased towards neoliberal PRI/PAN while suppressing opposition. Actions such as declaring Calderon the winner of the 2006 elections without doing a recount when there were statistical anomalies shown by independent organizations, and not penalizing PRI for distributing prepaid giftcards to buy off votes during 2012 elections is why the MORENA government is saying that INE is fundamentally corrupt. The current government has a good reasoning to dismantle it IMO, and it doesn't appear to be voter suppression - all the polls point out that MORENA is going to win by an astounding margin this election so there's no need to be anti-democratic.
