Fuck Subscriptions

Naming and shaming all "recurring spending models" where a one-time fee (or none at all) would be appropriate and logical.

Expect use of strong language.

Follow the basic rules of lemmy.world and common sense, and try to have fun if possible.

No flamewars or attacking other users, unless they're spineless corporate shills.

Note that not all subscriptions are awful. Supporting your favorite ~~camgirl~~ creator or Lemmy server on Patreon is fine. An airbag with subscription is irl Idiocracy-level dystopian bullshit.

New community rule: Shilling for cunty corporations, their subscriptions and other anti-customer practices may result in a 1-day ban. It's so you can think about what it's like when someone can randomly decide what you can and can't use, based on some arbitrary rules. Oh what, you didn't read this fine print? You should read what you're agreeing to.

Assuming I don't want to buy an Epson printer from the late 90s, what are some actual options for DRM free no subscription printer? Or the entire industry is fucked?

Last time I checked, Brother was still the best brand for no nonsense, cheap printers, even with good Linux support. I have a laser printer from them.

Not sure if it's still the case.

As for an ink printer... Man good luck with that.

Just bought a brother printer. Works great with Linux, no extra BS. Love it.

As far as I can tell, it's literally the same thing I bought almost 10 years ago. Which, I mean, is fine. I don't need anything more.

i mean it works, even with linux and even my phone over an usb otg adapter, scanner is a but quirky and hard to get working in windows
it got no bullshit like wifi and stuff

Get a laser printer.

My Brother laser printer was no-nonsense. My HP printer required HPLIP drivers on Linux which I hate, but didn't require an account.

How secure do you want to be? Are you only trying to avoid subscriptions? Because color printers are known to print hidden, identifying marks -- forensic data -- on paper. The EFF tried tracking who was doing it and just gave up in 2017 when the answer appeared to be "everyone".

Brother might be the best there is, but I still had issues with ink continually drying out. Check with your local library. Mine allows me to print more pages than I need each day for free; I just bring a thumb drive with me out there. Considering how much clutter I avoid at home, it's preferred in my case.
