This. Their position in the Bundesliga, with its revenue stream and attractiveness to young prospects who can then be sold on for a profit, has become more or less self-sustaining. So you still have a lifeless village club without history or fan culture taking up a spot in the top flight while massive clubs like Schalke or HSV are stuck in the 2nd league. Hoffenheim would never have gotten above Regionalliga level (fourth tier) without Hopp's money, so the damage is already done, even if he divests now.

I'll never understand the hate Hopp or Hoffenheim get.

He took over his boyhood club that he played for as a youth it's not like he took over a club he has no connection with and with the talent they have brought through it's not like they've been bad for the Bundesliga.

And Schalke and Hamburg deserve to be in the 2nd league for the way they've been managed over the years. Hoffenheim being in the Bundesliga doesn't change how they've ended up.
