Wonder if they’re setting up their own servers and standards so they don’t have to go through Google’s

I'm very curious about this! Google provides Google RCS in Google Messages... but notably, ONLY when carriers don't provide RCS themselves.

If carriers provide RCS themselves (at this point, this is most of them)... they probably wouldn't want phones to superceed their RCS, in the same way carrier provided SMS/MMS isn't superceeded?

Of course, a lot of carriers nowadays provide their own RCS... by subcontracting Google Jibe for RCS lol.

If Apple wants to do this now, I wonder if they would have had an easier time if they had supported RCS much earlier?
