Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Fedora Workstation 39 makes use of the GNOME 45 desktop for having all of the latest open-source desktop capabilities, the LibreOffice 7.6 office suite, LLVM 17 compiler stack available, and many other updated packages available.
Fedora 39 is shipping with the Linux 6.5 kernel although newer versions will come down as stable release updates.
