There's article today how Ukraine since beginning of war lost 50000 armed personnel killed, 150000 wounded and 100000 MIA (presumably most of them desertions) - that's half their overall numbers including paramilitary and armed militias. And it means the rest of them is probably in very sorry shape in terms of morale and reliability. In such conditions even small numbers of fanatic veterans can make some difference... especially that this entire setup just scream "einsatzgruppe".
