It makes it easier to tell who is part of the in group and who is part of the out group. It also helps in establishing control over people.

    Yes in part but it's moreover a classism thing which is why private clubs and restaurants use dress codes as exclusion. The rich can afford to throw money away on clothes you and I would rarely use but most people can't.
