The difference is knowledge and intent. When you copy from StackOverflow, you know what bit you copied. You even joke about copying from the question instead of the answer because you know that the question has a flawed premise, but you've done it anyway and it worked at least once.
By copying bits and pieces, you've learnt what you're doing, and often still end up with a unique project.
Vibe coding is equivalent to ordering from the menu at a restaurant, asking for 1 or 2 items to be slightly modified, then claiming you are good at cooking because you made the dish that arrived. You have gained no skill, the food is same as everyone else who ordered that dish from that restaurant, and claiming you made it is false attribution at best and IP theft at worst.
There are a huge number of vibe coded games all jumping on the bandwagon when a novel yet simple game is successful. Something that's not obvious when vibe coding a single project — yet becomes obvious when many people try — is that all of these projects are effectively the same. They all contain the same stolen code, and they "authors" don't even know it.
I personally made over 80% of the existing mods for a game. When someone tried to vibe-code a new mod for the game, the only thing the AI could do was copy parts of existing mods. The parts that worked well were the functions I had used in multiple mods, and the parts that completely failed were the functions I had needed only once.
My favourite finding was that the AI had filled the "author name" field with the data it most commonly found there - my name.
AI doesn't think, it only copies.
