One of my favorite things about Bicycle design is how once a good design comes along it is remarkably hard to dislodge. Quick release wheels, pneumatic tires, dual pivot swing arm derailleur. A lot of these designs are over a century old now but are still in use more or less unchanged. Everyone’s always creaming their pants about “innovation” but I always find a durable, useful, and repairable design that stands the test of time to be much more impressive.

funnily enough for roadbikes this is proven to be better, but the UCI - basically the global regulation body for road cycling - banned it fearing it'd lead to loss of spectators on account of looking like shit. in fact anything downtubeless is out.

To be fair, I agree. Triathlons are not regulated by the UCI and as such triathletes ride something like this aesthetic nightmare:

At least they get pissed on, I guess

I would bet bike manufacturers also thought they couldn't sell these ultra aero time trial style bikes to their main customers and are happy to let uci keep rules that make bikes look "cool" but still update some core tech every 5-10 years. All the teams are riding bikes to basically advertise them.
