Tom Hurndall was a 22-year-old British photography student. He was a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement. On 11 April 2003, he was in Rafah refugee camp in Gaza. He saw Palestinian children caught in Israeli gunfire. He went to help them. He was shot in the head by an Israeli sniper, Taysir Hayb. He was wearing a bright orange jacket. He was unarmed. He fell into a coma and died nine months later, on 13 January 2004.

Hayb was convicted of manslaughter and obstruction of justice by an Israeli military court in 2005. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. He was released early in 2010 after serving six years. An inquest jury in London found in 2006 that Hurndall was "unlawfully killed." The jury said he was "shot intentionally with the intention of killing him." The jury also said it was dismayed by the lack of cooperation from Israeli authorities.

Hurndall's family said the blame goes higher up. His mother, Jocelyn, said: "From the moment that Tom was shot, we said it wasn't about the soldier, who is a small part of the machinery, but about the responsibility of the Israeli army and its lack of accountability over civilian killings."

Better not get mad about it in the UK or they'll prosecute you for terrorism.
