Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned Thursday that the United States is trying to break Canada so it can “own us” as he urged oil-rich Alberta not to begin a process toward separation in Monday’s referendum.

The vote is not a direct referendum on independence. Alberta, which has the world’s fourth-largest proven oil reserves, will decide whether to remain a province or instruct the government to begin the legal process toward a future referendum on separation.

“This referendum comes at the worst possible time,” Carney told a large pro-Canada rally in Calgary. “The world has become more dangerous and divided. Some outside our borders are working to break us so they can own us.”

I think that's exactly their thinking. They're supporting separatists in Alberta and Quebec, and inundating people with their propaganda trying to set Canadians against one another and exaggerating how many Canadians don't want to be part of Canada. Unfortunately, this stuff is quite effective. Unless Canadians stick together the USA may do serious damage to our country. Annexation doesn't have to take place via an immediate military action. It can be a slow war of social and economic attrition.

You mean "everything is broken" -this was the PC party mantra for 2020-2024. No one even seems concerned Andrew Scheer is American.

Really wish the rest of the political spectrum lost its already nonexistent spine and did the same thing back to the US.

Honestly, the best thing that can happen to the world is the three superpowers - US, Russia, China - breaking up into smaller, independent states that do not hold nearly as much influence as the previous big states did. At most, an EU-style independent countries' (primarily economic) alliance

It's not effective, it's been repeatedly shown to be ineffective when they've do polling outside of the provincial gov for it. It's why the alberten gov has not been showing any of the preliminary results for these votes, the only reason this is being pushed rn is cuz trump is desperate and is looking for any angle he can reach for to interrupt his fall from majority power and a win for his regime.
