In the European Union, side guards had been required on all trucks since 1989.

Enough said. Adopt it. Why do we do this to ourselves?

    And also in Canada. This surfaces once in a while, usually when a cyclist is killed, and it always ends up with "it would be ideal but nobody wants to pay for this".

    Apparently we can't burden the truck owners with the cost of installing them, and no level of government wants to help.
