I'm think just Tech here, or maybe more specifically digital technology - the period till 2000 was mainly driven by techies, after than it was mainly driven by grifters, generally with backgrounds like Finance or Marketing, not Technology.

Many people seem to still have the idea that Techies lead Tech Startups, but that hasn't been true for at least 2 decades.
