I've never played any kind of handheld, but I'm really curious about these devices as devices.

What's a low cost device that is fun to play but also fun to play with?

If you enjoy tinkering, in the past I built a raspberry pi handheld with a 3d printed case that was fun. However, really nice handhelds that emulate everything are pretty cheap these days, and there are several. This one looks pretty good, but I have no experience with it.
