I've never played a Metal Gear game because I figured that it was some military glazing action movie wannabe with a couple of wacky memeable moments here and there.

Well I was watching a someone play through the original and this shit actually seems right up my alley. It's way, way goofier and less chuddy than I expected. It is very action movie, but it happens to mimic the style of the only type of action movie I like. The type that is so over the top and silly that you wonder if it's taking itself seriously or not. Like Escape from New York in game form.

I can pirate legally acquire literally every game in the series easily, But where should I even start? There's like a million of these games and remakes. Should I start with NES game? Metal Gear Solid PS1 or Twin Snakes? Which ones are skippable? What the hell is a Revengeance?!

I'm playing through them with my friend right now. Just finished 1. My plan right now is to go MGS1, MGS2, MGS4, MGRevengeance since that's always going forward in time, basically in release order, and progresses in mechanics.

Then go back to the in-universe start and go MGS3, MGS PW, MGSV. I'll probably play the MSX games and the other portable games roughly in release order after that by myself. Not sure about Twin Snakes.

MGS1 is the one to start with. It references the MSX games a bunch but it's playable without that knowledge. I'd recommend skipping the NES one entirely, it's basically a worse version of the MSX games. Any of the versions of the other games seem to be mostly fine, I'm a purist so I'm gunna' stick to the original console versions mostly though.

i would recommend against playing 4 without playing 3. 4 makes many references to 3 to the point many scenes will either make no sense or will lose its impact if you lack the knowledge of 3. it also talks about the twists and the big plotpoints of 3 in the regular dialogue so most of the intrigue will be lost when playing 3 (all of this was assuming it's your 1st playthrough)
