Strategic Missile Launching Drill Conducted in Eastern Region of DPRK

Pyongyang, October 4 (KCNA) -- At dawn of October 3, a drill was staged to launch an intermediate-range strategic missile from an eastern region of the DPRK toward the East Sea of Korea.

The drill was conducted as part of the efforts to train the missile soldiers operating the hypersonic strategic weapon system in handling their equipment and evaluate the reliability, efficiency and mobility of the DPRK's war deterrent.

Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, oversaw the launching drill on the spot.

Among the spectators were Kim Jong Sik, first vice department director of the C.C., WPK, and Jang Chang Ha, general director of the Missile Administration of the DPRK.

Noting that it is a very important measure for ensuring national security and a responsible action of our army to build up the powerful and reliable nuclear deterrent through sustained verification of major components of the war deterrent, improvement of their performance and mastery of the capabilities for their successful operation and to show the counterattack means of our army in constant mobilization posture, Comrade Kim Jong Un said:

"Through today's launching drill, the strategic missile soldiers have fully demonstrated their professional qualifications and counterattack posture, clearly showing that they are very good at operating their major offensive system and they are always available for mobilization. They also added confidence to our deterrent.

I highly appreciate commanding officers and soldiers of the missile unit who participated in the drill.

We must continue our responsible efforts nonstop to constantly and repeatedly make the enemy recognize the reliability and fatality of our strategic offensive means.

This is a form of exercising deterrent.

As always expressed clearly, such activities on our part are definitely aimed at more rapidly developing the country's nuclear war deterrent.

This is indispensable for protecting national security and stability in today's geopolitical environment. There will be no change in such view and line of ours.

We must deter various threats by dint of powerful deterrent and ensure a safe environment for the building and activities of our state."

The missile used in the drill was launched towards the northeast direction and hit the target point 1 000 km away from the East Sea of Korea at 43°36' 28.04" latitude and 138°00' 47.02" longitude.

Comrade Kim Jong Un expressed expectation and belief that all the missile forces would remain faithful to their missions of defending the sovereignty and security of the Republic in a responsible combat posture. -0-

Kim Yo Jong, Department Director of C.C., WPK, on Strategic Weapon Launching Drill

Pyongyang, October 3 (KCNA) -- At dawn of this morning, a drill of firing a strategic weapon toward the East Sea of Korea was conducted.

An intermediate-range strategic missile was used for the drill.

The head of state personally oversaw the drill of a firepower sub-unit undertaking an exclusive special mission.

The joint chiefs of staff of the ROK, which tracked our drill, announced that the missile flew more than 700 km, while the Japan defence ministry termed the range 680 km.

They are interesting numbers.

We have already witnessed similar announcements four times and, finally, we came to the conclusion that the superiority of the special flight mode applied to the missiles in our possession has been verified in practice.

Of course, we should neither believe the enemy's tracking results nor satisfy ourselves of them, but such figures help take a look at the limitations of the enemy's tracking capability and the special features of our missiles.

Whenever we applied the wave-like trajectory mode to missiles, the enemy failed to track the targets from their first skip points.

Extension of the trajectory at the downward stage gives the numbers quite similar to the numbers of the ranges announced by the enemy.

The enemy always made such a lame excuse that there is a limit to the detection capability because of the curvature of the earth's surface, but in fact this just serves as a proof of our perfect missile capability and the most scientific "evaluation index" confirming the power and reliability of our weapon system.

They should acknowledge the speed of the missile.

And they would be well advised to recollect our announcements that it is capable of changing its flight orbit at a low altitude and AI was introduced into it.

In other words, this means that there is no way to avoid this attack.

Representatives of the Missile Administration reported to the head of state that it is possible to set at least four flight orbit modes according to a purpose and target with the technology recently introduced.

The head of state expressed the belief that any country in the world could not have access to such technology for at least several years. -0-

here's what South Korea and Japan said

The missile was launched from the Wonsan area at around 6.30 a.m. on Saturday (2130 GMT, Friday) and flew more than 700 kilometres (434 miles), the South Korean military said in a statement. Seoul and Washington were analysing the test for details, it added.

Japan's coast guard, in an emailed statement citing the Japanese defence ministry, said the object may have been a ballistic missile and appeared to have come down, warning ships to take precautions.

South Korea's military said it has raised its monitoring of any further missile tests and will share intelligence with the US and Japan.

The South Korean presidential office's national security council convened an emergency meeting on Saturday to assess the situation after the missile launch, the office said in a statement.
