Shit ass projects have always existed and they always will. Yelling at the shit won't make it not be shit. We saw this happen with public game engines and now again with AI making coding cheap but understanding still just as expensive. Also, if you haven't played these recomps yet you should

I agree. Ai is good at churning out code quickly, and can be a helpful tool to speed up production. But without a dev behind it that knows what they're doing the only "quality" control is "does it work? Yep, ship it." Zero understanding of how or why, no ability to maintain the code or make edits.

My partner is a software engineer and describes using it as managing a junior. It'll do the busy work, but you have to check the code, clean it up, and make it actual work in the context of your project.

Personally as a 3D artist, vibe coding annoys the shit out of me. So many helpful looking plugins, none of which work quite right when you install them, and only work on one specific version of blender. No chance of being updated for the new versions, making it pointless to add it to my workflow. And they're charging money for that shit so now I can't even buy plugins that would be useful to me with confidence anymore.

Vibe coded slop will never be as good as human made, no matter how good ai gets if the vibe coder doesn't understand the code.

Dont be so sure, or you are bound to be fooled one day. They will get to be indistinguishable eventually. Given the environment doesnt collapse first.

No matter how good AI gets, how will a vibe coder maintain the code base? Or keep it up to date with the latest software it works with?

If it gets to the point where a vibe coder can ask for the ai to update the code for him and it works perfectly, then I can guarantee the vibe coder will lose access to the AI. Capitalism will step in and the rich will keep it exclusive so they can turn a profit with entirely ai run companies selling ai made digital products and software.

It's already happening to an extent. To get any real use out of it you have to pay to use it. Grok went from limited free use and unlimited paid, to extremely minimal free use and limited the paid tier to the extent of the old free tier, made a higher paid tier and limited that too. As soon as exclusive licencing deals with big corpos start happening, regular people using it effectively will be a thing of the past. Except as an ad platform of course.

Yeah okay bud. The plan is to replace everyone. They're going to keep feeding these things and they will get better. Everyone can keep down voting me all they want and thats not gonna change anything. The only question is what will you do when you can no longer tell?

Idk why you're so upset with me, I told you I agreed with you but now I'm starting to think I misunderstood your initial comment. "Understanding is expensive". Yeah because vibe coders don't understand the ai slop they're putting out, which is why all the vibe coded stuff out there is slop, and you still need to pay a dev if you want a good product. And like you said, shit ass projects have anyways existed. Where do you think so the vibe coders came from?

Of course the plan is to replace everyone. The rich are evil as fuck. But "everyone" includes the vibe coders.

I kind of don't understand your point anymore. Unless you're upset people are calling out vibe coders and you feel personally attacked for some reason?

I'm upset I'm saying that one day it will be so real you can't tell and people are like "yeah fuck you bud". So its whatever. The point is moot if everyone just wants to bitch.

I never said it won't be, just that it currently isn't. And we probably won't see vibe coders anymore once it is imo.

But in the context of this post, the recomps are probably garbage because ai is nowhere near that level yet.

Okay, well in the context of this chain, all I was saying is everyone better watch out. The code in the end won't matter. Its everything else that they will be making that is indistinguishable. That world is going to suck before it burns up and its where we are headed.

This is exactly why I believe yelling at vibe coders is unhelpful, and giving them pointers on how to do it right is way more effective. Why bully them when you can just make lots of them become genuinely good coders?

Idk I get it both ways. Coding by hand is fun and you learn a lot, while also developing a mental map of your work. Vibe coding is fast and cheap, it was always going to become a staple. But you dont own that work and its really hard to maintain. We will find a middle ground, and we will tune things to where human readability is the default output. But for now, it just feels like a shitty Tron simulacra. Good enough for stupid projects like my Dark Souls board game character sheets, not really good enough for anything serious that needs to be maintained without the same amount of effort as doing it yourself.
