I feel like if there is a very specific topic that one might be interested in (like modding, a specific work of fiction, ETC), there should be a community for it, even if only one person will interact with it.

I think there are actually too many (dead) communities. I remember a while back the admins announced they'd do a purge, but it doesn't seem to have worked.

There's also the question of whether making the community here, with few users and lots of federation blocks, is better or worse than making it on lemmy.ml. A community about Leftist Aesthetics makes a lot of sense, but not so much for a community about Competitive StarCraft Brood War.

I have to agree with this. Every time some niche thing pops up it dies because... It's niche. I'm not gonna make a com where I am the only poster because we have like 10k people on this site. Meanwhile a lot of my hobby sites on reddit are like, half dead anyway, and reddit has millions of users. It takes huge numbers of ppl to really develop hobby subs. We just don't have those numbers, nor do we have the engagement or frequency from the users we DO have. The most engaging posts we have get maybe a few dozen comments while most don't even get to double digits.

Add to this, people come here for leftist news and discourse. That why none of these niche subs would ever really take off. I don't come here to see pictures of people's cats or what the cooked for dinner. Add to this, we also know, as leftists, not to share a lot of personal details online. Talking about hobbies and such, sharing pictures, etc. is just opening yourself up to being doxxed by some feds, and we have feds all over, because this is a leftist forum. lol
