I genuinely expected this to be fanciful, but it's well-evidenced, which is welcome news. I guess it's probably worth mentioning that both of them were also married with kids, though.

    I imagine that this would have been the expectation for any man of standing. The idea that people can just choose not to is fairly young (and even today, it's not universally respected, as you're probably aware).
