The comparison between the cultural change that made divorce more acceptable is apt. The shame associated with divorce was so intense that tolerating a certain level of abuse was preferable. As the shame faded, the abuse threshold people would tolerate lowered. The same is happening with abuse by parents.

I feel like the elephant in the room here is adoption of cultural wedge issues by the right and the adoption of political identity as a personal identity of the older generations.
