It's in the title. Bikepacking is not commuting.

This is good for people like me who likes to go on road trips on bike trails. I dont have a car, nor a campervan, but I have a touring bike with panniers, and explore dedicated bike paths where I can find them.

But these can have multiple use.

For example, where I live there's a few disused railways that are now long distance bike paths. Locals are using sections to commute, cyclists in lycra are using them to train, and tourists like me are exploring them to go from town to town to town while camping along the way.

You're right about connections though. Compared to the road network, even my province which boasts the longest dedicated bike paths network of this kind, there's still a lot of safe missing links between towns and cities.

I am very familiar with bikepacking, I’ve gone a few times this year alone, but this is the micromobility com (do we call these com’s, comm’s, or communities?)

But my point was that bikepacking trails are like barely mobility focused, if at all. They’re for recreation. Which is great and all, but doesn’t really feel like what this country is lacking. So this sounds like a big win, but it isn’t really fixing anything. Great if you love bikepacking, but besides that not much to write home about.

I toured for 8 months in 2024-25 around Europe and SE Asia, and since then bikepacking for me is kind of just a cope because the roads are too dangerous by me to really ride anywhere. If there was a network of bike paths or protected bike lanes, I would love to do some travel by bike here. As everyone knows, there is some fantastic cycling infrastructure in Europe. I doubt I’ll live long enough to ever see it get that good in the US. But I could imagine it getting closer to what Vietnam does, where it isn’t really bicycle specific, but it works, and more importantly actually connects places.
