Thats how signing bonuses work... I never spent one I got until well after the "probationary period".

Same w/ 401k's, thats usually 18 months.

    The company match often has a vesting period.

    The funds you contribute they have no claim to, you're right.

    The company matching contribution can be taken back if you separate in the 1st 18 months typically (and they do, been there).

    Most companies have a longer vesting period than 18 months. Most are closer to 5 years.

    Not in my world, its been 18 months for the last 6 jobs over 30 years. Might be the vocation, I'm in aerospace.

    But fuck me 5 years? That egregious in my opinion... 2 years tops, the rest is an open invitation for dickhead management to be assholes. Or an incentive to fire you at 4y 10m to get their interest gaining money back.

    For the longer vesting periods, it's normally like a staggered thing. 4-6 years is common for 100% vestment. But after 1 year you're 20%, 2 years is 40%, and so on.

    I've seen this with 401k, 403b, and stock options over my working 20 years. Similar with friends and family.

    Wow learned something new today. In my industry its standard 18 months its all yours going forward.

    Stock options have always been a joke though, we had "windows" we could exercise them. Well wouldn't you know it the stock would tank a few days before the window opened... EVERY. FUCKING. TIME.

    For stocks, we used to have a choice between options or grants. Options were always a joke because you were basically paying market value when they vested, so you could just go buy them on the market for the same price. So I always chose grants, which were 1/4 of what they offered you in options.

    IDK what they would call ours, they would give you "x" amount of options at market but they we not real stock. When the trade window was opened you could sell them for the profit of the original issue price. So say they give them at 10 bucks and the window opens and its at 20 bucks you make 10 bucks per share.

    It was a joke as the stock tanked every option window.

    I did get lazy w/ one company and bought all company stocks w/ my 401k. They ended up being bought out by a major US blue chip company. That was a lucky wind fall.
