Got food poisoning this week, probably from cilantro.

I’m pissed. First time I’m my life I’ve ever had it and now I have to boil my pico de gallo or it’ll probably happen again

No boil, but wash in (lightly) soapy water with lots of agitation for at least a minute and rinse well. Or use a product designed for that and rinse well.

Yeah, I'd be pissed too. The problem these days is that anything less than an actual cleaning agent isn't going to dislodge whatever industrial-strength nasty is on the leaves, so you can't just rinse and call it done anymore.

Not shaming you, I had to learn the hard way too. I wash all produce now, and have for years. When you know, you know, and now unfortunately you know too.

  • I’m probably going to do both going forward

I know boiling works cus I cooked the beans I made with the water from the contaminated pico the cilantro was in (didn’t know I had a problem at that point).

I’ve been eating the beans still, no problems, so the cooking must’ve helped neutralize it.

The tomatoes are pretty watery, even after pulling out over a cup of water. Plus the lime juice added a bit back.

Basically I just dumped it into a high-rimmed sauce pan, turned on the heat and waited til it was boiling. I gave it ~25 minutes on a light boil, and it smelled a bit less pungent but otherwise looked about the same.

Yeah washing your own cilantro is a pain in the ass but it's worth it.

Obligatory joke about how it's a bigger pain the ass to not wash it.

Fr though I've heard it's basically impossible to wash the bacteria off veggies if it's there and cooking is the only safe option. Washing is for dirt and pesticides. So do both.

  • My grandmother lived in an expat enclave in Taipei in the 60s and was told to dunk absolutely everything from the market in a dilute bleach solution and let it dry.

Same treatment for the odd skin rash. Have the kid take a bath in dilute bleach (I have had this procedure, itchy as fuck but it works).

    I guess that's an option
