    I'm going to guess that creating more categories and divisions produce more winners which reinforce interest in the activity. In this case, we get a news article about a new record, even if it isn't the record.

    Yeah, it's pretty acceptable in any activity where those with interest in it are predominantly of one gender, because the sample size inevitably biases them to win.

    I often think about the surprising accurate assumption that many women in game development are trans women, sometimes used in transphobic rhetoric, but there is an obvious through line between people who are socialised male but feel out of place ending up in less social, online hobbies (coding and gaming) due to that blend of expectations and ostracization.

    I'm a teacher and it's pretty obvious from a young age how almost all gendered skills are entirely that way due to social expectation.

    It’s fascinating to me that they basically have to use gender too, because the other people in this category are also Chinese children

    Then you'd have countries trying to have their own beneficial categories made, and no one wants to compete against the USA in the "fastest to eat" category. Not that they couldn't win, they just really don't wanna.

    The record regardless of gender is 3.51 seconds. If they didn't have a women's version then there would be no woman champion. Now we have one.

    Because women can't compete with men but they still want to win. If they had no chance at winning they would be less motivated to participate at all. Thanks to separate categories more people compete, there's more money, better events, more sponsors and so on and so on.

    Even chess has a women's class, for some reason. I'd initially imagined it's for security and feeling safe. But then I heard the ELO is lower for women at a certain level compared to men, so that's weird, and sucks in a way.
