He had Indiana Jones LITERALLY ride off into the sunset at the end of the third movie. The most over the top cliche thing for a hero to do. And he dragged him back to make another one about aliens. >:(

George couldn't write a good "fall from grace " story for Anakin cuz he was living his own.

    Not OP but while Spielberg directed Last Crusade, the film was written by Jeffrey Boam, George Lucas, and Menno Meyjes. Lucas clearly had a strong influence beyond just the writing as well, judging by things like the R2D2 hidden in the hieroglyphics in the first movie and the Club Obi Wan in the second.

    And Spielberg has to reel in GL during Crystal Skull, yet even I thought I was on acid during that fucking movie

    The problem with the Crystal Skull is Lucas was gung ho about making a '50s era sci-fi style movie and everyone else just wanted to have fun filming another adventure story with their friends. If they had just picked a lane either way, it would have been better.

    I'm okay with that for Indiana Jones, because Indiana Jones is Cliche Adventure Man. There have been a lot of Cliche Adventures Man, and Indiana Jones is the Cliche Adventure Man with the highest production value. When Indiana Jones throws a mook off a rope bridge, the filming dummy has electrically powered flailing arms. He punches the bad guy and gets the girl in the end. It's great!

    Right, but George took that away from Indiana Jones. They had him ride off into the sunset, live happily ever after, but no. He was a bankable IP and they wanted more money, despite how it would ruin the ending they already gave to the character

    Lucky Luke rides off into the sunset in every movie. Doesn't mean that is the end of him.

    It signals the end of the movie, not the end of the character.

    You're saying someone can't end a character's story by LITERALLY having them ride off into the sunset? Kind of an odd rule.

    And if you think losing a hand and watching your friend get kidnapped is a happy ending akin to "riding off into the sunset" then you just have a fundamental misunderstanding of movies in general.
