This was stuck in the ground at the side of a freshly resurfaced road in Hemmant where I parked this morning.

    Sometimes, AI isn't able to keep straight lines continuous. In this case it seemed really bad. Relying on my own ability to make out these things is something I'd like to keep doing. I also think it's important to call out. Even if I'll get things wrong occasionally. (But that's why I'd never encourage witch hunts or stuff like that.)

    Bro what are you talking about? What are those horizontal lines supposed to represent? The photo is very obviously not taken straight on to the path, which is why it runs diagonally. The sign also appears to be facing roughly directly away from the path, so it runs at a similar diagonal.

    More to the point…it's text on a sign. It's one of the easiest things to show is AI when it's actually AI. AI often does weird shit with characters even at the best of times, and try to get it to emulate the perspective on text that's askew and it's got no hope. But here there's nothing.

    I'd say you're clutching at straws, but there aren't even straws here to clutch at. Not even paper straws that have sat overnight in a drink.

    I'll try explaining it again. You take the lines in a picture that are obscured by an object that should be straight, and you see if they are consistent. The original picture is cropped very unfortunately at both sides, making the two visible portions of the path appear as if it doesn't line up. Here's me trying the same for the uncropped version. You can try to do the same with the original picture if you want to get a better idea of what I mean.

    I don't trust printed text to be a good indicator of AI (or not being AI) because it's one of the easiest things that AI can be trained on to get better, since the training material can be padded with tons of photo-realistic but rendered pictures of text that won't affect the training negatively. Additionally, for anyone with a little bit of photoshopping skills it's pretty easy to add to an otherwise AI generated image.

    Also it looks like you're assuming I'm still arguing for this picture to be GenAI, which wasn't even the case when I made my first comment. Sorry if came across as such. All I was saying is that it looked suspicious, for the reason I mentioned, and then later explained.

    Ok I'm even more confused now. That looks like it lines up pretty well, considering how the dirt & grass mess with things. I understand that you have an uncropped version now that you didn't have originally. Not sure where that came from because until now I've only ever seen the cropped version. But now I understand you do seem to know what you're doing, which makes me even more confused why your original version had those straight horizontal lines. What were those meant to be? Why didn't you have the lines following the direction of the path in that version like you did here?

    If I take the original image and instead draw lines from the left to the right to cover the edges of the path, I get these areas that in an ideal case wouldn't be there. So it seemed a little sus, is all. But that's before I knew that just outside of the cropped area were concrete slabs with grass growing between.

    (I really fired up GIMP to make an animated picture to show what I mean, haha.)

    Multiplied by every Tom Dick and Harry who thinks their AI 'detector' is hot stuff, and you guys are literally hounding artists to mental and emotional exhaustion, with a bigger toll on them than AI itself.
