So context, I've always used fully FOSS systems, aside from firmware, and I am a long time neovim and Linux user. I've tried neovim with wiki.vim before, but could never get into proper note taking. I ended up amassing a like 100 separate notes, never revisiting them, even if I tried to link between them. But I checked Obsidian out of curiosity. My issue of being unable and very bad at taking notes kind of went away, and the link system works pretty well. I feel very conflicted about using it as it's closed source, though I know many vouch for it, and it's arguably the only closed source I've been using in the past 5 years (I've been trying it for the last 2 days.) I know LogSeq exists and it went to shit since the rewrite to storing notes in.. SQL? lol

Maybe my problem is with the way I approach notes. I feel like I just type things and never revisit them, but Obsidian forcing me to link between them makes me revisit them. This is one of my gripes, and also the fact 99% of the time I feel I have nothing to say / write about / someone else wrote it before me so it shouldn't matter, so I don't exactly feel inspired

Wait, really? I haven't used it in a while but I really liked it.

I need to get back into note taking, both to organize my thoughts/knowledge and to also practice typing again (also can use as an excuse to finish learning a new keyboard layout).

Edit: I'm searching about it and the DB version of LogSeq is still in testing, but it is probably gonna replace the Markdown version entirely. I also saw a bunch of people complaining that there are still lot's of bugs in both versions and that the Markdown version also has a lot of performance issues.

Also the LogSeq team seems to use a lot of AI for coding. I saw a post about an alternative called Tine, but it is also vibe-coded, but at least they tell you that at the bottom of the page, but still doesn't give me confidence.

Edit 2: Found another alternative, ZenNotes, but it is also vibe-coded...

I really don't want to use Obsidian if I can avoid it too.

Yep I want to get into taking notes for the same reason again. Long ago, I used to publish a blog, helped a lot with thought structuring, but stopped. Taking notes feels very good to organize my brain. Yikes about LogSeq lol. I think I'll end up using neovim with obsidian.nvim and call it a day, I don't need more features than the linking aspect.

Yeah probably a good option for you. It sucks that there are so little open source opetons that are not slop-coded. I also found about another app called Siyuan, but doesn't look like what I'm looking for.

I really like the outliner style of taking notes so I downloaded the new LogSeq DB version to give it a shot, I haven't messed with it much but at least there is some new features that look cool.

Tho I'm not gonna lie, this whole thing makes me want to finally learn programming so I can make a good floss note taking app. Hopefully I manage to do that sometime soon.

Yea I checed SiYuan from another comment, bizzare they try to replicate Anki with FSRS but also "agentic" slop wiki, not my thing lol. I havent tried the Logseq DB version, I just heard from others its bad, I did use the Logseq MD version, but I didnt like it. It seems puzzling something so easy as [[hyperlink]] and a graph view dont have any FOSS implementation that is good lol, sadly im not a programmer :/ im in the linux sysadmin side

Yeah I head that too, but I decided to take a look just to be sure, and so far it's been fine, the worst is that most plugins don't work with the DB version and are abandoned, so there isn't alternatives. At least I don't need a plugin anymore to give icons to my tags which was the most important one for me.

    but I didnt like it

Honestly I felt like that at first, didn't like the flow, the bullet styling and it felt too much for me, but after sticking to it a bit it clicked with me, now I get it. Being able to link and recall everything is great.
