HTS made and then abolished a religious police force well before toppling Assad. Allowing education of women and worship of other faiths in a state that is over 90% Muslim is far less extreme than other Muslim countries in the region.

Past actions would have him as an extremist, terrorist, and war criminal, current actions show him as a relative moderate. That doesn't mean forgiveness but when judging Syria via him you should maybe look more at the present than the past.
