I agree for some furniture, but I'm not buying used couches. I see couches roadside with a "free" sign from time to time, and I just shudder thinking about what's happened on that couch.

That, I agree with! Also, upholstered stuff in general can be risky because of bedbugs.

Still, used upholstered furniture from an actual store (or gifted from someone you actually know) is probably safer than curb stuff. I would only take hard-surface furniture from the curb.
