It sounds less like "thinking" in general, and more a specific kind of thinking where you imagine you're having a conversation with another person (or thing, in this case), except that they're just a part of your own predictive mechanism of your brain

    I think programmers call that rubber duck debugging.

    Yep, and it's important. Called that because classically you put a rubber duck on top of your crt monitor to talk to so you don't have to drag another human in. I usually just drag another human in though even if all they do is stand there while I talk it out myself
