It is my understanding that they did not fly out on 9/11 itself, but the FBI gave them airport escorts to chartered flights out of the country in the days right after 9/11 when most flights were still grounded.

    I don't remember exact timelines. I do remember loved ones scheduled to fly home from abroad that had to wait. It wasn't military or affiliated, just visiting other loved ones, but I was deeply worried and wanted them to come home.
