I don't think the crisis they're referring to is about the situation he caused. I think they were referring to his mental condition, hence 'individual in crisis'. He felt trapped and was trying to escape from his home (seemingly in any way possible) and I'm sure the drinks only helped with making a poor choice in what to do then and there.
