So what am I supposed to use instead? Android by Google? GrapheneOS on a Google Pixel? I reluctantly switched from Google Pixel to iPhone a year ago and plan on just not upgrading as long as possible tbh

Motorola has a Graphene phone coming out soonTM. Else just buy a non-Google Android phone.

Do you have any idea how hard these are to get on most of the planet?

LineageOS exists and can be installed on most androids in a day.

Yeah but the OP talked about buying a non Googled Android and centainly this service is limited.

Also, only a few selected ROMs support VoLTE. Sure, you still can install the ROM but your phone won't make calls, unless the area is covered by legacy 2G. Most carriers will require VoLTE to unlock the SIM, tho.

what's blocking someone in your situation from buying something from the likes of murena or installing lineage yourself?

Google makes a huge amount of money from Android though so I’m curious to see what Motorola is cooking

You could always install AOSP-based ROMs (LineageOS, /e/, etc.) on those non-Google Android phones. Google doesn't really make any money from those (if you avoid Gapps).

If you want to avoid Android and iOS altogether, you're going to be disappointed with Motorola as well, because they'll keep using Android (which, just like the other ROMs, GrapheneOS is based on), leaving you with basically just Linux-based operating systems like postmarketOS, Ubuntu Touch or Sailfish OS.

Like Huawei and China are any better than the US companies.

Right now there are almost no options not linked to some major political movement or crime against humanity.

So it would be best to choose the option that gives you the most freedom to avoid government and corporate overreach after purchase. Where it is developed or manufactured is less important compared to that.

  • You make it sound like china and US are the same level of bad. When US+Israel are currently doing a televised genocide. Chinese AI models are the reason why most of the world are even able to run efficient AI model on their own devices. Chinese EVs are making electric cars more affordable. Chinese companies are leading the solar adoption. Chinese ram manufacturers are breaking up RAM monopoly. Chinese companies are also making sodium ion batteries mainstream.

Sure china is not free of any wrong doing but comparatively, they are not as bad as US.

And if you wanna avoid both china and USA then you also have fairphone on which you can install calyx, e/OS, or lineage.

Yes China is a million times better in terms of human rights than Israel

Tell that to the Uyngers and Tibitans.

It looks different from the Palestinian genocide, in that rather than straight bombing and stealing land, China focuses more on mass interment and re-education, forced sterilization and forced labour.

Just like the US and Israel, China is being ruled by capitalist Oligarchs that will commit genocide to gain and control resources.

You sound like a Israeli propagandist talking about Palestine.

The UN has recognized both as genocides as the evidence is sufficient.

The UN says there were rapes on October 7 which has been fully debunked.

Just because they said something bad about Israel once after 3 years you think they're impartial? They're about as pro-Western as you can possibly get

    The same tired two-sides-of-same-coin rhetoric.

My dude, the US has/had: native genocide, race based segregation, concentration camps, decimation of the Vietnamese, Koreans, Iraqis, Afghans, Iranians, Lybians, Somalis, backed up multiple jihads around Africa and Asia, received a lot of Nazis from the WWII and has their own pet genocidal Israelis, was responsible for multiple military coups, another genocide in Indonesia, is starving Cuba, and so on. Also two atomic bombs in the resume.

America is Satan through and through. Stop being disingenuous. Or are you also a monster?

Its important to understand what motivates that level of barbarity. Its not the nation or its people, its capitalist greed through Oligarchy. For all its image of freedoms, it has always been freedom of the powerfull to exploit the weak.

Its the age old story of empires. They are all built on exploitation. US empire, Soviet Empire, British Empire, Chinese Empire, Caliphates, Roman, Greek, Ottomans, Israeli. The moment a small group of greedy individuals gain sufficient power over the masses in a society, they employ it to exploit people.

If we want a better world, we need to stop giving small groups of people executive power. Party politics, organized religion, monarchy's, corporations, they all need to go.

Why are you talking to me in platitudes? Are you a liberal? Most probably, I see a .world there. Firstly: everyone is equally bad is a discourse that only tries to absolve the shitty ones around YOU. That's the great monster to defeat right now, you dishonest prick. Not only the greedy ones around you, also the petty ones around you, and your complacent relatives and neighborhood. Secondly: we WHO? Take your fat ass outside to make a difference, the change you want to see, then maybe there you can find a we.

Everyone is not equally bad, I have not stated that. Liberals are why we are in the current mess. They are naive and overly tolerant of the evils of the world. They make the right sounds, but their actions are insufficient.

Agree, we can all do more and we should. Let's just make sure we target the right things. Make sure we are archers and not just other people's arrows.

GrapheneOS on a secondhand pixel is the best choice, but that's not saying much tbh. The entire smartphone ecosystem is fucked.

That is a valid concern, especially since there is no viable options. I guess the best option would be to ditch the phone and wait for the Linux phone - but that isn't necessarily viable either, so compromises have to be made - for now.

No idea, I'm really hoping the co-op of Motorola and non-android ends up working on more than the intended hardware. They say they want it for flagship, but hopefully it ends up working on a number of cheaper Motorola phones or such

There isn’t really a correct answer, nor one that will “absolve you of sin”. Trying to maintain some kind of purity is as much a distraction from the root of the problem as self-recycling is in regards to global warming.

Having a tool you have confidence in us important. I’ve been slowly backing out of the Apple ecosystem since the last election, but being present, the sacrifice of time and place, at town meetings, party meetings, etc. is going to have a much greater impact on the world around you than trying to purchase salvation with phone.
