This is true of all students, but many students (e.g cis) already get that affirmation, hence why it's important to support trans students especially.

I've had this experience as a professor for trans students, gay students, autistic students, you name it. The trick, aside from just being generally supportive and encouraging, is my classes have projects that are open ended so they will sometimes do it on their identity (e.g. I had a lesbian student do their social psych project on LGBT couples and I found out it was a major reason she sought grad school!).

It's funny that it even works in my statistics class. Their projects can be on anything as long as they have a statistical test. Last semester I even helped a student get participants for a survey on furry fandom! (Helps I had a friend into that). She was so grateful to have a part of her identity validated with respect and not ridicule.
