▲ 100 ▼ Grilled "cheese" (thelemmy.club) submitted 1 day ago* by FauxPseudo@lemmy.world [M] to c/cooking@lemmy.world 30 comments fedilink hide all child comments Life is crazy right now. I had to rebuild my cell phone today and my wife is craving comfort food with no nutritional value. All cooking counts if it stops you from paying $5 to $6 for a single grilled cheese and fries at someplace that actually offers that. Cost per person, $1.20 Phone surgery was a success. New battery and screen. But this is temporary because this model goes EOL next month.

You gotta use mayo. I was skeptical but after trying it I could not deny its results. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 6 child comments replies: [–] OfCourseNot@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago (1 child) You mean with the cheese? Or on the outside instead of butter? permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world [S] 5 points 1 day ago (2 children) On the outside. Instead of butter. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] OfCourseNot@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago (1 child) Glad to read that. That was by far the less wrong option, still pass I think, but it's basically oil with a bit of egg so I'm not really sure why I find it so weird. I might brush a bit of egg on the bread for my next toasties, tho, that doesn't weird me out unlike spreading mayonnaise on the outside of a sandwich. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] TastehWaffleZ@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago I tried it before and it had a mildly sour tang to it that I did not enjoy at all. I’ll stick to my butter permalink fedilink source parent [–] tpyo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago I do both sides toasted with mayo. Lightly at first on the "inside" flip them over and put the cheese on the hot bread, let the sides toast a few seconds then put together and flip as necessary. But you gotta make sure the mayo has toasted into the bread, so don't use too much. It's not a Monte Cristo! permalink fedilink source parent [–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago Add cream cheese and prepare to be amazed. permalink fedilink source parent [–] Lupo@lemmy.world 1 point 1 day ago Butter for the intimate 1 or 2 grilled cheeses, so they can be tended to. Mayo if you have to make them reliably and fast, mayo gives you more wiggle room when it comes to burning compared to butter. permalink fedilink source parent
