    It’s the only safe decision. Who’s to say there’s not a right wing coup and this banana republic becomes hostile overnight? It almost happened once already.

    The coup has already happened. They’re just trying to find a way of either invalidating all future elections (emergency powers), or rigging them such that they establish a permanent Republican ascendancy.

    If successful, future elections will become purely performative, a thin veneer of legitimacy over an explicitly engineered conclusion. America will cease to be a democracy in everything but name. And as North Korea, China, and East Germany have shown, names can be worthless.
