It's been 25 years. Many adults don't have any memory of it and don't care. I think we should stop remembering if we're just gonna keep fucking bombing the middle east until someone attacks it a third time.

    Remember what it turned us into, what we became, unabashedly, afterwards.

    Remember how it broke our collective minds and caused us to go into a violent frenzy that only made things immeasurably worse.

    Remember that.

    Remember to never let that happen again.

    Remember that we are still in the midst of that collective frenzy, and while you personally may not be able to directly stymie the violence carried out by the powers that be...

    Remember that you can hug your neighbor, not hate them, that you can see every other human being as fundamentally another human being, whom should be lent a helping hand, not a closed fist nor veiled threat.

    Remember that you can do that right now; promote love, instead of hate, inspire curiosity, instead of fear, foster acceptance and community, instead of isolation and atomization.

    That, that is the ultimate antidote, to why what happened that day, and afterward, happened.

    I remember thinking we deserved it. I remember being tortured by unnecessary flag propaganda and watching friends dragged away to yet more middle east wars. Suddenly being told thst you're unpatriotic because you disagree. I was terrified to vote at 18 because people who put up non-GOP stickers or signs got vandalized. What if someone finds out I vote wrong? There's a lot of gun toting nuts and klan descendents in my state, and they've been in charge ever since. I have fewer rights because of 9/11.

    I don’t know anybody who doesn’t remember it and doesn’t care or who wants to be at war in the Middle East.

    There are over 3 Billion people or almost 36% of the worlds population that weren’t even alive when 9/11 happened. Add in maybe about a hundred million more of anyone who is 25-28 and doesn’t remember anything from when they were a toddler.

    In addition to that, the US only has 330 million and of those, close to 1/3 are under that mark too. So now you’re talking only about 220 million out of 8.3 billion people even were “directly” affected by it and that’s only 2.5% of the global population.

    It may seem significant in your sphere, but globally, it’s fading quicker and quicker.

    I was specifically excluding the people I know who were too young to remember it from my statement as they can’t have forgotten something they didn’t experience to remember in the first place.

    But even including the group you are talking about I still don’t know anybody who wants to be at war in the Middle East.

    I’m not saying they don’t exist, but it does make me feel like we are being ruled by a tiny minority especially when you keep seeing polls that say that 70+% want universal healthcare and we still have representatives on the “left” who won’t support it just as one example.

    The US commits (directly or through Israel) daily 9-11s, and given that 9-11 was motivated by American terrorism in the first place, the whole "never forget" can only work for the one comfortable generation that never experienced any other event like that.

    The current generation sees what's happening, they see the US bombing schools and weddings, and they see Americans commit mass shootings at events and at schools. If another 9-11 happened today, you'd have a much harder time getting everyone on board with invading another country for revenge.

    They'd still get away with it probably, sadly, because Americans don't seem to ever be ready to revolt. But I can't imagine it would be the same unity.
