Hossenfelder's grievances over academia started at a legitimate place. She was critical of a part of academia that I've seen many other academics confirm is a real problem, including David Albert and Tim Maudlin, who have discussed how physics departments are weirdly hostile against anyone wanting to research theoretical models that could underlie quantum mechanics. It is, for some reason, a taboo.

Indeed, I even got permabanned from the the /r/askphysics subreddit for asking a question about a paper, because one of the many authors on the paper was a physicist named Robert Spekkens, who had once published a paper talking about potential models that could underlie quantum mechanics. I asked the mod why I was permabanned, and they said because they hated Spekkens for this reason, because he was a "pariah" for researching that topic. The mod told me they are a physicist in academia, a professor, and that if I knew anything about academia then I'd know everyone thinks Spekkens is a pariah for publishing on that.

It's an incredibly weird culture, where one topic is just treated as incredibly off limits to research.

However, her channel has become crazier and crazier, as she seems to be very influenced by her audience, and chasing the money, so it has evolved from a legitimate criticism to just pandering to a lot of right wing nut jobs. Now, she has all this income, but does not even use it to pursue what she said she wanted to research in her own time. She doesn't even talk about it much anymore. Very sad.
