Which distro should I live-check?

Fedora KDE, CachyOS, Debian. One of those, depending on your needs.

You can rice KDE Plasma easily. Check why ksyslogger uses so many resources, it's not normal. You can get a full Plasma desktop with under 400MB of RAM usage and under 0.5% CPU.

I use Thunderbird as mail client, as Kmail doesn't really cut it for me.

    Surely this depends on the CPU?

    On a Thinkpad T430s with a Intel Core i5-3320M, i.e. 2 cores with 2 threads each at 3.3GHz max., ksyslogger ran at 3-5% CPU. This was in a live environment which I shut down after tweaking it for about 30mins, so IDK, maybe it would've settled down evtl.?

    You mean ksystemstats? You can theoretically disable it completely. Plasma depends on ksysguard but you can probably just run plasma-shell without it. Never tried. There have been comparisons between "lightweight" DEs and Plasma where Plasma didn't consume more resources than say Xfce.

    Thanks, I guess it was ksysguard what I saw eating CPU in Q4OS.

    I tried CachyOS Plasma live yesterday, it ran so much lighter! Idling at ~1%, that's basically the same as my current (fully riced) Openbox system.

    However, the live system is very barebones.

    I researched CachyOS and I approve so far. Even the ArchLinux community doesn't seem to hate on it. Have to boot it up again and sniff around under the hood.

    This might just be my stepping stone back to a fully fledged DE.
